Most women dread the thought of getting old, but my mom is not one of those. In fact, as she turns 50 this year, she wants to celebrate it by giving herself a set of diamond jewelry. And of course, she wants only the best that her money can buy.
There was a time in her life when she was still a struggling chef with children to feed. She was working as a sous chef at a famous 5-star restaurant in New York when my sister got sick. She was only five years old at that time and she needed heart surgery. She was born with a congenital heart disease and her condition had worsened. Without the surgery, she would die for sure.
While mom had insurance, there were things that my sister needed that were not covered by the insurance. My dad’s earning as a junior reporter at a local radio station did not really pay much either. Thus, we needed money to pay for a portion of the medical bills. My grandmother had given her a set of diamond jewelry when she and dad got married. It was worth a lot of money because I know that the earrings alone had a two-carat diamond on each piece. She sold the set without much thought.
Now that she is turning 50, she had decided to replace that diamond set which she sold 20 or so years ago to pay for my sister’s medical bills. Like she often does when she wants to buy something, she started an online search. Her search brought her to an online jewelry review 2012 which intrigued her. She read it through and it talked about Solasfera diamonds by David S. As she had lived in New York for most of her life, she is familiar with David S. Diamonds. But she had never been to the store. The review was promising so she decided to drop by their showroom at 5th Ave. Of course I went with her.
Immediately as we entered the boutique, we were impressed with the ambience. The consultant who approached us was very professional and helpful. Mom told her what she wanted and she promptly showed us the array of fine jewelry in their collection. She also offered to show us the exquisite diamonds in their collection. Indeed, their diamonds have a specific brilliance unlike any other that we have seen in our lifetime. Mom explained to her what she wanted and she left momentarily. She came back with a nice gentleman whom she introduced as one of their designers.
Mom had brought a picture of my grandmother’s diamond jewelry with her. He said that while he loved the design, he wanted to update it a little to make it trendier. He took a few minutes to make some sketches. We looked them over and found one that she liked the most. It looked almost like the one that my grandmother had given her but with a few other touches that gave it a more modern appeal. The next step was finding the right stones for the designs. Together with the consultant, they showed us a tray of diamonds. She made her choice with their help and advice. Within a half hour, the whole process was done. The whole set will be ready in a week to 10 days, they said. Mom cannot wait to see her new jewelry and show them off on her birthday celebration in two weeks.
