It’s unanimous, World of Warcraft is the standard. It’s the big game on the block that everything else gets compared to. It’s loved and has every right to be. But what if game makers happened to look at this blockbuster and thought, “I can improve on that?” Some games have taken certain aspects of WoW and come up with an alternative that, well, frankly leaves WoW in the dust.
EverQuest
In 1999 when SOE first launched their MMO, people were too busy figuring out what to do in an MMO. But there was something there and it was catching on. When Ruins of Kunark was released the creation of communities became all important along with role-playing. By the third incarnation of EverQuest, groups began to work together to take down monsters. They did neglect the casual play community and the solo and small group cohort. But they were too busy building the raiding concept. By the fifth version of the game they were bringing groups together into a single raid.
So, along comes World of Warcraft and people loved it. EverQuest saw their game drop off significantly. In all fairness, however, they have since overhauled the game. But its greatest strength remains its large-scale raids – up to 54 people! Imagine. If raiding is your thing, nothing beats EverQuest.
Dark Age of Camelot
Nations developed, Hibenian, Midgard and Albion all resulting in battles that would rage of hours at a time. It was so fun to sneak around, engage others in battle, break through a line and assault the keep.
But, of course what really blew the mind were the battlegrounds which expanded to provide challenges for everyone. But the real thrill came in taking, and if you could, holding the keeps. The battles never ended, and consequently neither did the fun.
WoW has some great battlegrounds, but not necessarily as good as DAoC. If you enjoy the PvP of WoW, you really have to try Dark Age of Camelot. They wrote the book on PvP.
Lord of the Rings Online

Come on, it’s Middle Earth. Players can pass the same places the Fellowship passed through. You fight to keep the Ring from falling to the enemy as you move through the unfolding storyline. The world evolves around you with towns burning down and rebuilding and wizards fighting to hold back the darkness.
